The Art Of Nowhere!!

So I bet your thinking 'Matt, doesn't do any artwork except maybe one a month' And you would be wrong I do atleast two pieces of art a month. HAHAH No I'm Kidding, look I just cant show anybody the work I do half the time.

Some of the work I go for is under some sort of 'Something so Secret, Don't show anybody or we will sue' Mentality. I wouldn't have a problem with this if I actually recieved money for my silence. But I don't. In fact the Majority of the time I dont make a Cent and most of the time the Studio, advertisting firm or whatever say you want the Job then do This for free or Don't Bother!!

So as an artist your stuck between a rock and a Hard Place. Your time gets eaten up doing work that will not see the light of day and you won't see any money. In some regards this is a good thing for the majority of studios want the work 'Yesterday' So everything is rushed and I am never happy when I rush stuff out!! But Since again I compete for the Job, someone else always gets it.

Recently I applied for some work at a toy company, I was asked to do a test. And to solve a Design problem. I was given this on the Wednesday with the deadline on the Friday. Which would have been fine If I didnt already have an 8+ hour working day on both days. How expect you to just drop everything and concentrate on a TEST and not an actual job is beyond me.
So You are never giving it your best and you fail.

In a way I am glad I'm not in a Relationship with anyone, I dont know how much it would suffer from my lack of attention. It seems Thats an artists family life suffers from extreme pressure and I'll talk about that next time.

Do you Want a Tasmanian Staying at your Place?

Its probably my worst kept secret, for a long time now I have been planning to head to the US this year. (Once I organise Flights) First Stop will be San Diego Comic Con, I'll be there for the entire weekend of festivities.

After that I'm not sure how long I'll be staying for but it may mostly be over the West Coast. It depends on how many people offer to give me free accomodation or tell me where the best and cheapest hotel that doesn't contain drug dealers and giant bugs are located in LA.

But I can't wait to finally meet my long time web mates from the drawing board. And to rub shoulders with Famous People yeah thats right I wanna meet MOVIE STARS too!!!.

So if you have a spare room available in August, wanna meet up and maybe want to show me the real LA sites to a real-life Tasmanian and not show that all Americans are 'the Redneck Gun Toting' kind then let me know its only 5 months away and I've already begun planning. Who would have known that comic strips would be so hard to do they are even harder to be funny. But I try and thats all I can do, so in anticipation of Comic-Con please enjoy this weeks Logopolis Cartoon. Also on Thursday a special edition of Logopolis for valentines day!!

Whatcha' Lookin At??

So it was a really nice day here in Tasmania, and I decided to head into the city for some R&R. I sat in the Park at 'Salamanca Place' for almost 5 hours Brainstorming some new cartoons for this here blog.

So the Park benches are laid out horribly there. Normally I like a table but for most of the day they were busy. So these benches face each other and you have to sit directly opposite someone else. For awhile there I was mostly on my own then out of the blue this weird guy comes and sits down and starts mumbling to himself. Not only that but tries to see what the hell I' m drawing. I'm an artist who can't stand snoops and I can't draw in front of a crowd so I tried to edge the sketchbook away from prying eyes. I think the old dude was a Dutchy too!!

And heres a tip when its a really hot day wear some sunscreen my heads still a tinglin'.

The Waiting Game

Theres nothing worse than having to have gone through a lot hard work for prospective clients in the space of just a few days then it becomes a Waiting game to hear back from anyone.

In some cases they have taken six months or more to get back about the job if at all and you have to keep digging for information on whether you can put all other things aside and begin work on the Project or go elsewhere. One thing is certain don't wait just move on to another job because if you become dependant on the outcome of one job you will get Nowhere!!. If it is positive then weigh up your options and see which job will be the better for YOU!!

EGO

It's unfortunate but I've met some artists that have an ego problem. This can manifest itself as a swollen head or worse still an Asshole attitude.
Tasmania has hundreds of the latter and it also exists all over the world. I've always felt that I don't suffer from this affliction but this is not true either. All artists have an Ego of varying degrees but with one common thread, they like it to be rubbed every so often.

I'm no different I love it when people comment on my work with only accolades of how good something I have done is and hate it when someone likes to point out little inconsistincies or mistakes. But where those with the asshole attitude would just put it down to jealousy. The ego in me tries to take it on board for better work next time. And whether your a learner or a professional you should treat everyone with respect.
